Video Translation Services

Sometimes we receive inquiries about videos in a language other than English (e.g., French, Italian, or just about any language). A written English translation of the video is what’s requested. In cases like these there are two steps in the process of arriving at a written English translation.

Translators by definition work with written text. Before a translator can be tasked to produce a written translation of the spoken audio from the video, a written version of it in the original language must be prepared. This process is called transcription. To prepare a transcription an assigned linguist listens to the audio and writes down exactly what’s heard. A time code might be part of the transcript format to make clear the correlation between the video and the transcribed text.

Once a transcript is prepared then that written language can be assigned to a translator to translate. So if the video was in French and a transcriber produced a written French transcript of the spoken content, the French transcript can then be assigned for a translator to translate the material into English (or any other language for that matter).

So to review, transcribers work with audio content. Translators work with written content.
