Expanding the activity categories for eLearning translation services just a little we’re typically tasked with one of 4 types of activities listed below.

At the most basic level we are generally called on to translate one of two things when it comes to eLearning content. It’s either printed language or spoken language.

1) Text Translation

Text from eLearning course content comes to us in a variety of file formats. It can be as simple as a Word or Excel file.

2) Target Language Voiceovers

Audio content as part of a narration or video is another type of eLearning translation content. Translation of audio content occurs in two steps. First a written script of the audio content is translated into the target language. The target language script can then be assigned to a professional voiceover talent for recording.

3) Video Locationalization (dubbing, subtitling, captioning)

When videos are part of eLearning content they can be handed in a couple of ways. Subtitles (written text) can be added to the existing video containing spoken language. Or voiceovers can be prepared and dubbed into the video.

4) Specialized Application Integration Services (e.g., Storyline, Rise, et. al.).

Translated content sometimes requires integration into an eLearning authoring tool such as Articulate Storyline. Storyline courses can contain all of the content categories listed above. Once the various pieces are translated then placing them back into the Storyline application environment is a final step.

Post Delivery Edits to Storyline Translation Projects

In a translation project for Articulate Storyline courses there can be numerous steps along the way to reaching a completed course translation. Each course is unique and may contain a variety of elements and steps in the translation process to completion. In addition to translated standard course text there can be: 1) graphics with embedded text that requires translation, 2) voiceover recordings, 3) transcribing source language voiceover content, if no script exists, 4) sometimes adding subtitles or voiceovers to embedded videos, and 5) of course integration of all translated inputs into a final target language course.

Some clients will not have internal resources to make an informed review. However, if a review is planned, this can be a better time for clients to review translated text prior to integration into Storyline.

In view of the relative complexity of some Storyline translation projects, especially those that involve attention to several categories of services, what happens when clients want to make a change to the final course translation at the very end? Perhaps it’s a preferred translation of a term, or some other discretionary change.

We make the change of course. Still there might be a better time to make a change to a translation than waiting until then end of a project. A typical Articulate Storyline translation project might follow the steps below:

Review the online course via browser
Export standard slide text to Word file
Identify graphics with embedded text for translation
Identify any other course items for attention (e.g., audio narration, embedded videos)
Prepare the translation project including all text for translation
Translate/proofread the translation project
Generate bilingual source/target language file for customer review; send to client for translation comments (if any)
Integrate all translated inputs into the target language Storyline course

Point number 7 above is one preferred stage in the project for clients to review the translated text. Source and target text are aligned side by side for easy comparison. Some clients will not have internal resources to make an informed review. However, if a review is planned, this can be a better time for clients to review translated text prior to integration into Storyline.
