Sometimes client send us audio (or video files with audio content) files to translate. In these cases the source material is an electronic file (e.g., MP3) with spoken language.
Transcript Preparation
In cases where there is no written version of what’s spoken in the audio content, a transcript must first be prepared. That is, someone listens to the audio and writes down exactly what is said. Often a time code indication is placed next to the transcribed text for reference.
Translation Means Written Language
Translators by definition work with written language. Once the transcript has been prepared then it can be given to a translator to translate into a language other than its original one.
Transcription and Translation Pricing Methods
Transcription services are available typically on an hourly basis while translation is priced according to the number of source words. For transcription an estimate is made of the hourly requirement based on the length of the audio content. One rule of thumb is about one hour’s time for each five minutes of audio. Numerous other factors, including the quality of the audio, can affect (lessen or lengthen) the amount of time required.
Translation usually requires no estimation since once the transcript is finalized a known word count is established and there is no doubt. Translation pricing is calculated by multiplying the number of words times the established per word rate for the target language.
