Articulate Storyline E-Learning Translation Services
Having just completed preparation of multiple new quotes for Articulate Storyline E-Learning translation projects, we thought it might be interesting to outline the method for calculating translation pricing. For anyone not familiar with the e-learning application ‘Articulate Storyline’, the software is a popular e-learning authoring toolset used by more than 48,000 organizations (according to the company’s website as of July 2016).
In the case of our recently issued quotes, deconstructing the elements for translation in the e-learning course created in Articulate Storyline we had the following:
- Standard text for translation contained on the course pages
- Text for translation as part of graphics files (e.g., drawings, illustrations, et. al.). In addition to translating this category of text, graphics files needed to be edited and recreated in the target language for translation (e.g., Spanish, French, etc.).
- Embedded audio narration
- Articulate integration of the above inputs
The first item listed above is perhaps the most straightforward to price. Text for translation from Articulate Storyline can be exported into Excel or another common file format. The number of words can then be determined and a per word rate for translation and proofreading is applied to arrive at a price.
The second item above is also relatively straightforward to price for translation and editing. A per graphic fee is applied to determine pricing for graphic files with embedded text requiring translation. If there are no graphic files with text for translation then this pricing input would of course not apply.
If there is spoken audio for translation, then often a script will be available containing the spoken narration. If a script of the actual spoken audio narration is not available, then a written transcript can be created by listening to the spoken audio and writing down what is said. Once a written version of the audio is in hand, the text can be quoted based on the word count. An additional pricing item then is having a voice-over talent record the audio segments for integration within Articulate Storyline.
The final pricing component then is the actual time for bringing all target language elements (text, graphics, audio) back into Articulate Storyline to produce a finished translated deliverable in the target language.
